SELF-BRANDING
the voice you use to define yourself
How we define our individuality is very important. From there streams confidence, self-belief, self-doubt and our value system. Let’s look at how you can define your personal brand and stand out from other individuals by embracing originality.
What is self-branding after all?
In the layman’s terms self-branding is actually a form of marketing that an individual uses to express their values, their personality and individuality to the world.
We are constantly selling ourselves to others; whether we are selling our original products, or our likeable traits in relationships, in exams or when applying for a job. Understanding self-branding will allow ourselves to best display our favorable traits to a demanding audience.
Benefits of Self Branding
Gives massive confidence
When you are fully and unapologetically you you cannot be swayed by the opinions of others. This is the power of self-branding it allows you to stand in the face of criticism and remain grounded. It is your back bone.

Keeps you focused
When you define your brand and your individuality it allows you to focus only on the things that add value to your brand, distractions and forced interactions become repugnant and repulsive.

Improves your decision-making skills
Related to the previous point, self-branding guides your decisions; you will constantly be asking yourself such questions:
-
Is this good for my brand?
-
Is this the message I want to share?
-
Does this define my brand?

Makes you an effective communicator
40% of words we speak in conversation are irrelevant; have you ever felt like you’re just rambling? Self-branding will allow you to say only what you mean and that which is true to you. Also, it helps us to consider how our listener(s) might interpret what we say which will lead us to use words more effectively and intentionally to ensure mutual understanding.

Improves Creativity
Branding allows you to find different ways to express yourself, to express an idea. Without SB our efforts are mundane and we will only target a smaller group. To be able to relate with different individuals we must cater for their unique differences and behavioral variances – it requires ingenious tact.
A brand doesn’t necessary mean something of commercial value, your self-brand is who you are and how you teach others who you are and what you have to offer. Here’s a few guiding points:

What’s the message you want to share?
We all have a voice; we all have something to say and some value to add. Take time to answer this question, think deeply and fine tune your message, make it undeniable and original.

Define your tonality
How do you want people to perceive your general persona? Will you be a welcoming and jolly person? Will you be a laid-back individual? People’s first impression with you will determine how they will interact with your brand. Now that you have defined your tonality be consistent with it.

Always aim to add value
The most effective brand strategy is to make it your goal to add value to everyone you will interact with. This will put everything else in place; it will amp up your communication skills, your decision-making, your coping mechanisms and all your efforts will be made with this end-goal in mind.

What are your values?
As a brand ambassador what do you stand for? how does your brand expose your values without you saying a word? Some good brand values are morality, honesty, integrity and commitment. Now stick to these words and build your brand around them.
Remember personal branding is about managing your name – even if you don’t own a business. Having a strong sense of identity is authentic and worth the efforts.
